May 30 Weekly takeaway
1 min readJun 4, 2021
I was reading a blog and thought it would be a good motivational tool to write down the things I have learned in a week.
Investment
- Invest at least $100 per week. In a year, I would have $5,200. With a 4% annual return, the money will be around $6,300 in 4 years.
- Time is a friend of the wonderful business, but the enemy of the mediocre.
Atomic habits
- Habits are not a finish line to be crossed, they are a lifestyle to be lived.
Scott Adams: Writing tips from Dilbert Creator Scott Adams https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDwm-UPILuw
- How to know your topic is good (You feel good. Others are familiar with this. Using a imaginary friend.)
- Write for your reader, not you.
- First sentence evokes curiosity.
- Pace and lead the reader.
- Direct sentences.
- No jargon, adjectives, adverbs, cliches (Tomorrow is very hot vs. Tomorrow is hot. The readers can’t remember the difference of ‘very’).
- brevity=brilliance
- Sixth grade vocabulary
- Musicality, percussion (e.g., Make American great again. The sentence feels right.)
- No ugly words: moist, talc.
- Consider associations (I like babies and automatic weapons.)
- Visual language (Mcgurk effect, what you see overrides what you hear)
- Violate a norm
- End clever or provocative (e.g., call back)
- Write every day
- Humor formula: clever, naughty, bizarre, cruel, cute, recognizable (Use at least two of them to make a joke, more is better)
